Sometimes the simplest phrase makes you think more deeply. Or it can motivate you to keep striving toward your goals, even when it seems like life is just pulling you along in a direction you haven’t chosen. I always need great quotes about fulfillment and happiness… doesn’t everyone?

I’ve heard motivational quotes often get a bad reputation as simply being ‘pretty words’ without actual meaning. But as with anything in life, they are as useful as you make them.

You can read a quote and think, ‘Oh, that’s nice.’ But if you immediately forget what you’ve just read and go about living your life in the opposite direction, then why bother reading anything ‘helpful?’

Taking in the words, thinking about them, and putting them to use to improve your life and attitude — well, that’s the greatest compliment you can pay to the person who originated the quote. And it’s the most helpful thing you can do for yourself as well! 🙂

Positive Thoughts For April

“There is no glory in star or blossom till looked upon by a loving eye; There is no fragrance in April breezes till breathed with joy as they wander by.”
— William Cullen Bryant

“The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.”
— Socrates, 469 BCE.

Apparently, the human desire to always have MORE is not a new thing.

This is why I have become fascinated with minimalism. I doubt that I will ever live a purely minimalistic life (nor do I desire something that drastic), but letting go of the extra certainly helps me to appreciate the important.

My thoughts are calmer when I am not constantly thinking of new things to acquire.

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
— Jane Goodall

What better reason to set good examples for our children — and really everyone with whom we interact?

“But it is a sort of April-weather life that we lead in this world. A little sunshine is generally the prelude to a storm.”
— William Cowper

“Remember, happiness doesn’t depend upon who you are or what you have, it depends solely upon what you think.”
— Dale Carnegie

I have to remind myself of this every day and reign in my thoughts. Sometimes they can run away with common sense.

There are days when it’s easy to be envious of others, when we really just have to be grateful for what we have in our own lives.

“April is a promise that May is bound to keep.”
— Hal Borland

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
— Henry Ford

This pretty much applies to everything in life. Our minds are powerful. Use your power for good, and realize you CAN.

“April is the kindest month. April gets you out of your head and out working in the garden.”
— Marty Rubin

“Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great.”
— Orison Swett Marden

I really needed to read this quote. Sometimes we get so bogged down by the SAMENESS of everyday life that we lose our ability to see joy in the regular things.

Perhaps make dinner a little more special. Cloth napkins, sitting at the dining room table together, listening to music instead of watching television.

What common occasion will YOU make great this month?

“With the coming of spring, I am calm again.”
— Gustav Mahler

“Our spring has come at last with the soft laughter of April suns and shadow of April showers.”
— Byron Caldwell Smith

“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”
— Margaret Atwood

“The April winds are magical
And thrill our tuneful frames
The garden-walks are passional
To bachelors and dames.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson (April)

“I shine in tears like the sun in April.”
— Cyril Tourneur

What Does April Mean For Motivation?

For many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, April is the month when it feels like spring finally arrives. The days get longer and the weather gets warmer, making it a great time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

We feel motivated to actually stop thinking and start doing things after months of hibernation in our warm homes.

If you’ve been feeling stuck or unmotivated, April is the perfect time to get back on track.

This April, let’s focus on staying motivated to live an intentional life. We can do this by reading and internalizing quotes from famous authors and others who have shared words of wisdom to help us work toward our goals and remind us that life takes patience.

April does mean the ‘true’ arrival of spring, after all. 😉 Get outside, connect with nature, shake loose those final winter cobwebs from your mind, and begin a new adventure.

  1. Hello Julie, a good collection of quotes. Like you I love quotes and somehow they so often just hit the right spot. I think the last one is speaking the loudest just now. It reminds me that one finds purpose as they go along and should not sit back waiting for purpose to drop into your lap.

  2. I can’t believe Socrates said that! My dad just gave me and my hubby a long speech about not working so hard. Its funny how much more sense it makes when a philosopher says it. 🙂 These are great quotes! My favorite has to be Henry Ford’s.

    1. Your comment made me laugh… Isn’t it always easier to “get” something when it’s in a nice short sentence instead of a long speech from a parent? (I try to remember that when talking to our teenagers… but it doesn’t always work.) Thanks for visiting and I’m glad you enjoyed the quotes!

  3. Such a good idea to have these around so you can provide yourself with affirmation. Day-to-day, mental, can be a struggle. This is something I am working on in my Spring Refresh Challenge. I will have to add this to my mental refresh!
